Sixteen Days Sierra Leone and Liberia Vacation

Day One: Arrival in Conakry

Upon your arrival at the airport in Conakry, the guide from Afrikan Wildlife Safaris will welcome you and then transfer you to the hotel. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Onomo or similar.

Day Two: Conakry to Kindia

After breakfast, you will go out to explore the capital.  Visut the interesting museum and then drive to the village of Kindia, en route to the Fouta Djalon highlands. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Moringa or similar.

Day 3Three: Dalaba

On this day, you will explore the town of Dalaba, with its interesting ‘casa a palabra’, a finely decorated building used for local chiefs. Visit the villa of Guinea’s first president, Sekou Toure, among other sights. Dinner and overnight at Hotel du Fouta or similar.

Day Four: Fouta Djalon

Today, you will drive into the Fouta Djalon, a stunning area of mountains, waterfalls, plateau and savannah, where we explore the charming Fulani villages with their typical architecture. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Baylis or similar.

Days Five and Six: Kissidougou and Macenta

For this day, you will drive to the home of the Kissi people, who are known for worshipping stone gods called Pomo, found in the forests. Then continue to Kissidougou and visit its museum which displays cultural artefacts from the region. Proceed and stop at the market of Guekedou, to reach Macenta. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Fritz or similar (Day 5) and Hotel Macenta or similar (Day 6).

Days Seven and Eight: Macenta and Nzerekore

You will explore a lush region of thick forests and remote villages. We may see mask dances while here, including one of the ‘bird men, dressed in feathers and with their faces painted white with kaolin. This is a secret society, and its members are believed to have powers that make them invisible. We also see the impressive bridges made of living vines, believed to be built by spirits during the course of just one night. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Macenta (Day 7) and Hotel Prince (Day 8) or similar.

 

Day Nine: Bossou to Ganta

Today, you will head out to the small village of Bossou and explore the forest, home to a group of chimpanzees. Constantly monitored by researchers, they are relatively easy to approach. From here we cross into Liberia and drive to the town of Ganta. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Alvino or similar.

Days Ten and Eleven: Monrovia

You will drive to Liberia’s capital, Monrovia. Visit the National Museum and the impressive Masonic Temple of Liberia, that has played an important part in Liberian history over the years. In the afternoon of Day 11 we see a mask dance that is typical to this region of the country. Dinner and overnight at Cape Hotel or similar.

Day Twelve: Bo

For this morning, you will cross the border with Sierra Leone and head towards its diamond producing region. We spend time learning about the process of diamond mining, as we join some villagers who show us their craft. Then continue to Bo for the night. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Dohas or similar.

 

Days Thirteen and Fourteen: Banana Islands

After breakfast, you will drive into the lands of the Mende people. Here we see a rare performance of the female Bundo masks – normally mask societies are for men only. Then continue from here to the archipelago of the Banana Islands, with its stunning beaches and fishing villages. Dinner and overnight at Bafa Lodge or similar.

 

Day Fifteen: Freetown

Today, you will return to the mainland and head to Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown. Explore the city visiting its lively markets and seeing examples of old colonial architecture. Dinner and overnight at Swiss Hotel or similar.

Day Sixteen: Bunce Island to Lungi and fly out

After breakfast, you will visit Bunce Island with its remote fishing villages and a fort dating back to the time of the slave trade. Then transfer back to Lungi for your flight home.
